THE HACIENDA NIGHTCLUB
May 1982
|
Description:
Factory Club at 11/13 Whitworth
Street West, Manchester opened May 21st 1982
The Hacienda Night Club
|
HACIENDA CREDIT CARD
Early 1982
|
Description: Color Pigeon Blue, yellow and silver
Designed by Peter Saville using his original Hacienda typographic identity.
From Factory "Around 6,000 were manufactured in early 1982, at incredible cost, by
the company who manufactured Amex cards etc. This was before the Hacienda opened and when
they thought they would need membership to resolve licensing issues. By the time of
opening it was realized that this would be unnecessary and around 2,000 were embossed with
names and numbers merely for the entertainment of the early habitus. Embossed cards may
be worth more, with the right name. Come with the blue slip card holder developed to
resell the redundant cards in the Fiona's fated Factory shop in Afflecks Palace Manchester
in 1989."
|
FAC 51 Badges, First
Iteration
1984
|
Description: Yellow and blue enamel with silver type.
1,000 produced
Designed by Peter Saville Associates
Manufactured by Johnson's Engravers, Leeds
From Factory "This was the first Hacienda Badge to be done in the enamel, prefects
badge style. It featured the color palette and typo of Peter Saville's never changing Fac
51, Hacienda logo. The pale blue in particular, whether it be Air Force blue, or Pigeon
Blue, was a Ben Kelly obsession second only to International Orange. "
|
FAC 51 Badges, Later
Version
1992 |
Description: Red and black enamel with silver type.
Designed by Peter Saville Associates
1,000 produced, mostly given away.
From Factory "We're not sure where these come from. Except it was the same typo as
the original Hac badge but with different color ways. It is possible these were done when
Ben Kelly changed the famous angled color on the Hacienda steel columns for the redesign
and re-opening in 1992. Certainly the new colors did include black and red. The
typography works as well as over which is probably what Peter Saville refers to as
"problem-solving design."
|
FAC 51
Matches
Designed May 1989
|
Description: They were designed to coincide with the opening
of Dry on 25th July 1989
and replaced the silver Fac 51 box of matches that had been used previously at
the Hacienda.
They are made of black wood with white striking heads. The box is made of glossy
card & is black with white text. On one side the text reads the Hacienda
address, and on the other, it reads the address of Dry. Originally they were
given out to customers over the bars free of charge; in later years we charged
10p.

* Limited edition of 4400 given away at the Hacienda Christmas Eve
1982.
The label bears the message "Merry Xmas and Good Will to All Members"
Description: Faded white printing on black plastic.
From Factory "We can't remember if this was Xmas present to the Hacienda regulars
or just a crazy idea. Certainly it involved taking a New Order piece that they'd recorded
for a local TV Xmas special the previous year and making a flexi out of it. As far as we
remember it was Beethoven's Ode to Joy, but we don't have a record player any more so we
can't be sure. "
|
Xmas Eve Ticket 1983 |
Description: The ticket is printed on thick white card with
text in red and blue. The back is plain except for the hand stamped number. The
ticket measures 2¾” long x 5¾” wide.
|
Xmas Eve Ticket 1986 |
Description: The front of the ticket is matt; on one side of

of this side is plain white with silver text. The text reads ‘Fac 51 The
Hacienda Christmas Eve 1986 9pm – 2am Admission £4’Red and black enamel with silver type.
The back of the ticket is glossy – on
one side of the perforation it is white, stamped with a ticket number , and
underneath the number is the Hacienda ‘c’.(Please enlarge the photographs to see
this closely). On the other side is the silver Hacienda ‘5 bar’ (the metal
flooring at the entrance of the Hacienda). ticket measures 9” long x 3” wide.

Description:
Factory Records headed paper from 1983 (measuring 210mm
across by 148mm deep) which would have originally been part of one of a number
of notepads specifically produced by Factory for use at their First
International Congress. At (approximately) A5-size and printed in black on a
textured grey-coloured writing paper, it features a small centered graphic
depicting two uniformed comrades of unspecified ideology shaking hands, along
with the date and venue underneath: "6.15pm, September 10th, 1983" at the "Connaught
Building, 58-60 George Street, Chinatown, Manchester, England"
The event was designated an official Factory catalogue
number, Fac 81, which is printed at the foot of the page.

The Hacienda Must Be
built
FAC 86
December 1983
|
Description: Factory Xmas card for 1983, reprinted for Factory Shop in 1990
Designed by Johnson/Panas, Manchester.
Status Very Rare
(1990 version with blue wrap round)
4 colour one-side printing on 4 sheets of card with printed wrap round.
400 produced; 300 mailed out. Later version, 500 printed
Original proposal was to make a pop-up Hacienda as that year's Christmas present. A
visit to Pollocks Toy shop in London confirmed suspicions that the only company in the
world that had the technology to make pop up books was in Chile.
No good for a quick turn
round. A cut-out theatre was obtained from Pollocks and delivered back in Manchester to
Trevor Johnson and Tony Panas. They came up with a construction kit that actually works.
Do it with care and you get a perfect 3D of the dance floor and back wall with it's
acoustic paneling designed by Salford University Acoustics Department, and even Salford,
sorry, acid corner.
