Factory Records: The Complete Graphic Album
Fac 461
June 2006

Synopsis
This is the first and definitive overview of the artwork of the seminal Manchester-based Factory label, covering its iconic record sleeves, posters, ephemera, venues and packaging. After a foreword by the founder of Factory, Tony Wilson, an introductory essay discusses the label's role in bringing design to the mainstream. Thereafter, the book is organized as a generously illustrated catalogue, arranged by the famous Factory reference system. Factory Works, as part of the story, has been given its own reference number - FAC 461 - making it a collectable item in its own right.

Madchester

Hallelujah: - As the summer sun rises over Madchester once again, acid-fuelled memories of baggy pants, bandanas and smiley-face t shirts become reality, and the city gets ready to party like its 1988. Think back to the days when Mondays were Happy, 808 was the name of a state and Hacienda was more than just a Spanish word - to an era that produced the most definitive soundtrack ever, for each generation to follow. 808 State, Jon Da Silva and A Guy Called Gerald lead the revolution in the clubs, while Clint Boon and the Freaky Dancin Bez lead the revolution on the stage. Oh, and there was some label called Factory Records run by a guy called Anthony Wilson. And for one summer evening only, Madchester is back in the area, with all six legendary outfits taking to the stage once more - for the party of the decade. And God made Madchester.

Hacienda 25 The Exhibition
Fac 491
19 July 2007 17 February 2008

RIP Anthony Wilson 20/02/1950 - 10/8/07

Manchester Music Mogul, factory records founder and owner of the Hacienda

Take a step back 25 years in time to the halcyon days of the Madchester music era and revisit the Hacienda, the legendary nightclub that became an international phenomenon and changed the face of the city forever.

Walk through the world famous Fac 51 doors to uncover some of the ideals and ideas behind its conception, as told by many of the creative minds that made it what it became.  Relive the experiences of Peter Saville, Peter Hook, Tony Wilson, Ben Kelly and Rob Gretton through their own stories and items from personal collections, including previously unseen video footage, items from the club itself and the graphic design that was instrumental in shaping the clubs identity. The exhibition also includes the first ever showing of the complete collection of the Haciendas iconic birthday posters incorporates original scratch videos by Claude Bessy and Swivel, and of course, will pay tribute to the music played and performed there.

Finally, exhibition traces the impact the club had in shaping the economic and urban development of the city centre, into the unique and original Manchester we know and love today.

Hacienda themed events are organised throughout the exhibition, from talks and debates to film and gig screenings.

FAC 501

All of Factory Records releases (both music and video) were given unique catalogue numbers in the form of FAC followed by a number. This numbering system was applied to all Factory productions including posters (FAC 1 advertised a club night), The Haienda (FAC 51), a hairdressing salon (FAC 98), a broadcast of Channel 4's The Tube (FAC 104), sellotape (FAC 136), a bucket on a restored watermill (FAC 148), the Haienda cat (FAC 191), a bet between Wilson and Gretton (FAC 253), and a radio advertisement (FAC 294).

Numbers were not allocated in strict chronological order - numbers for Joy Division and New Order releases generally ended in 3 or 0, A Certain Ratio and Happy Mondays in 2, The Durutti Column in 4. Factory Classical releases were 226, 236 and so on...

Why are you being told this?

The last ever Factory catalogue number was given to Tony Wilson's coffin (FAC 501). Brilliant.
